Eurovision
You Say Slovenia...

President Bush’s farewell tour of Europe will probably anger more people than it will cheer – but it does give him chance to re-visit one of the first foot-in-mouth moments that have (partly) defined his time in office.

The president is in Slovenia for the EU-US summit. The tiny Alpine nation is loving its time in the international limelight, its presidency of the EU finishes at the end of June.

And you would hope that Mr Bush has got a better grasp of geography these days.

In 1999, as Governor of Texas, he was on the campaign trail when he told a journalist from Slovakia: "The only thing I know about Slovakia is what I learned firsthand from your foreign minister, who came to Texas. I had a great meeting with him. It's an exciting country."

You guessed it, he had in fact met the PRIME Minister of Slovenia, Janez Drnovsek. Plenty of others have got it wrong over the years, among them Silvio Berlusconi (what? ‘Bush and Berlusconi make speaking gaffes’ shock), and numerous are the countries who have played the wrong anthem or hoisted the wrong flag when one or other Slov is in town.

I mean, it is confusing isn’t it? Both are former parts of Communist states, both joined the EU in 2004, both are next to Austria, their flags are strikingly similar and a female resident of both countries is called a ‘Slovenska’ in her native tongue.

But, come on, it has been 15 years now. Surely we can all get it right.

George, over to you..

theres more countires poipping up in europe by the month. no wonder we get confused.

Why drag up something said 9 years ago in frankly a lazy anti-Bush piece. I'm quite sure you'll find plenty of Brits unable to place Missouri and Michigan on the world map.

A female from Slovenia is called Slovenka and one from Slovakia is called Slovakinja .

BUSH TO VISIT LONDON SUNDAY-PROTEST MARCH ON DOWNING STREET BANNED

The Stop the War Coalition reports:

George Bush visits the UK this Sunday 15 June. The
George Bush Not Welcome Here demonstration assembles in
Parliament Square at 5.00pm

ANTI-GEORGE BUSH MARCH POLICE BAN TO BE DEFIED IN LONDON

"The police have banned our march from Parliament Square to
Downing Street, where Gordon Brown will be entertaining
George Bush. It seems that when George W Bush visits this
country traditional rights of assembly and movement are
removed from the people. This would be unacceptable for the
visit of any foreign leader, but for this one - a war
criminal - it is doubly unacceptable and we will defy the
ban. We are calling on all those who care for our democratic
rights to come to Parliament Square at 5.00 pm on Sunday 15
June."

Slovenia is the only country in the World, which has a word LOVE in it's name, so all people can remember that the most beautiful country on the sunny side of the Alps is called sLOVEnia :-)

The female resident of both countries is called the same then. I'm Slovenka from Slovakia. :)

There are mouch more striking differencies then similarities among both Slov.. countries. If one should care to check some historic details :)I do not know how a female resident in Slovakia is called, but in my native toung I am a "Slovenka" not Slovenska.
Lena form Slovenia

Cant say I'm really surprised as to such Ministerial misconceptions. If we were to re-visit our [Imagination] whilst allowing the [Music & Lights] to duly assist, then memory will serve other such EU moments whereupon many a sniping turbulance has mispalced a hair or two. Still, there is hope, isnt there?
