So Angela Merkel is "surprised" by all the attention she's got for her low-cut evening number.
"The chancellor was a bit surprised that this evening dress caused such a splash," said her spokesman.
"That wasn't the chancellor's intention. When there's nothing more important in the world to talk about than an evening dress, then you probably can't help it."
Oh, come now, Angela.
Pictures of her appearance at the opening of the new Oslo Opera House have gone around the world.
"Merkel's Weapons of Mass Distraction" said the Daily Mail. Gossip website Gawker had the classic "Deutschland boober alles".
The chancellor's people have got a bit exasperated with media criticism of her appearance.
And she might ponder along with Hillary Clinton and Home Secretary Jacqui Smith the sudden fascination with politicians' cleavages.
And is it any worse than the treatment of the last chancellor Gerhard Schröder?
He once sued a magazine for alleging that he dyed his hair.
As for the new Italian prime minister, well where do you start?
What was that about showbiz for ugly people?

Is he saying "as chancellor of Germany you have big things in front of you"

Is she saying "My blouse buttons were the Weakest Link. Goodbye."?

What front! I think she looks gorgeous, and it makes a great change from the usual sartorial stuffiness we get to see in politics. All credit to her - and may others follow in her footsteps.

I think she nwent a bit too far, with accepting the post of the Kanzler she accepted responsibility of promoting the image of German politics, German politicians and Germany. I am not against decollete, but perhaps she should have covered up about 3-4 centimeters. Her boobs are like two huge lamps shining around and lighting the place.

It only diverts our attention away from the real issues for a few moments.

Hi there Greg
I think Angela Merkel looks great with her plunging neckline. A great feminine touch to the evening in question.
Just to show that she also has other Assets than her good working brain.
Smart Girl I would call her!
Maybe George Bush was looking for the 'wrong weapons of mass destruction/destraction.
Would have been cheaper for him to gaze fondly down Angela's ample Weapons.
Kind regards

If it is of any comfort to Ms Merkel, [I Have Nothing-Whitney Houston].
However, insofar as the fascination, it is a pleasent surprise that one looks so glamurous than one does during normal bsuiness hours. I'm sure she is a huge asset to the German economy!
